The Hunger Games Universe Expands with 'Sunrise on the Reaping'

The dystopian world of Panem is set to return to theaters with the highly anticipated prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Lionsgate recently released the teaser trailer for this new installment, giving fans their first glimpse into what promises to be another thrilling chapter in the beloved franchise.

This prequel takes place twenty-four years before the events of the original The Hunger Games novel and film, focusing on the origin story of Haymitch Abernathy, a character previously portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the earlier films. The story begins on the morning of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell, setting the stage for intense action from the very beginning.

Glenn Close's Unrecognizable Transformation

One of the most talked-about aspects of the trailer is the stunning transformation of eight-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close. The veteran actress has completely altered her appearance for her role as Drusilla Sickle, a new character in the Capitol's hierarchy.

Close appears in the trailer wheeled on stage in a stretcher, dressed in garish clothes, heavy makeup, and sporting a striking red bobbed wig. But it's not just the hair and makeup that have fans doing double takes—Close's entire face looks different, with what appears to be fake teeth and heavy prosthetics giving her the appearance of someone who's undergone major cosmetic surgery.

Fans have taken to social media to express their amazement at the transformation. "Was honestly so confused because she had the aura of Glenn Close but I didn't recognize her, that makeup is insane!" commented one viewer. Another wrote, "Went back and rewatched it and was like no it's a different actress. took me four times to conclude that's Glenn." Many are calling this Close's most dramatic physical transformation to date, topping even her acclaimed roles in Albert Nobbs and Hillbilly Elegy.

Star-Studded Cast Returns to Panem

Beyond Close's transformation, Sunrise on the Reaping boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Joseph Zada takes on the role of a younger Haymitch Abernathy, joining Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, Elle Fanning, and Kieran Culkin.

The film also sees the return of President Coriolanus Snow, now portrayed by Ralph Fiennes. Snow was previously played by Tom Blyth in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and the late Donald Sutherland in the original trilogy. Sutherland, who passed away in June 2024 at the age of 88, originated the role in the 2012 film and continued through the sequels.

Directed by Francis Lawrence

Returning to direct is Francis Lawrence, who helmed three of the original Hunger Games films (Catching Fire, Mockingjay – Part 1, and Mockingjay – Part 2). Lawrence's involvement has excited fans who appreciated his vision for the previous installments.

Based on Suzanne Collins' beloved book series, the Hunger Games franchise has become a global phenomenon. With Sunrise on the Reaping scheduled to hit theaters on November 20, 2026, fans have plenty of time to speculate about the new characters and how they'll connect to the original story.

As the countdown to the release begins, one thing is certain: The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is already generating buzz, thanks in large part to Glenn Close's unforgettable transformation and the promise of exploring new corners of Panem's complex world.
