A Behind-the-Scenes Look at an Iconic Film Moment

Kiefer Sutherland is looking back on an "extraordinary" moment he shared with the late director Rob Reiner while filming the iconic courtroom scene in "A Few Good Men" where Jack Nicholson delivers his legendary line, "You can't handle the truth!"

In a preview of the upcoming CBS News special "Rob Reiner — Scenes from a Life," set to air on December 21, Sutherland, 58, shared a behind-the-scenes account of the day Nicholson filmed the iconic scene as Colonel Nathan Jessup.

"No one said a word, and Rob went up to Jack Nicholson and whispered in his ear, 'Do you want to do another one?' And Jack Nicholson said, 'Well, we're here,' " Sutherland recalled. "So they did another one, and it was just as extraordinary."

The scene, which has become one of the most memorable moments in cinematic history, was so powerful that Reiner, who directed the 1992 legal drama, decided to send the entire cast and crew home for the day after just one take.

"They had planned to shoot the whole day, and Rob looked at everybody and said, 'I couldn't ask for anything more, so you guys all have the rest of the day off,' " Sutherland shared.

A Tribute to a Legendary Director

The special comes in the wake of the tragic news that Reiner and his wife Michele were found dead in their Los Angeles home on December 14. Their son Nick has been arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their deaths.

The CBS News special is a tribute to Reiner's life and legacy, featuring new, emotional interviews from stars who worked with him throughout his career. Along with Sutherland, the special includes interviews with Albert Brooks, Kathy Bates, Anette Bening, Michael Douglas, Jerry O'Connell, and Mandy Patinkin.

Reiner, who was 78 at the time of his death, was known for directing some of Hollywood's most beloved films, including "This Is Spinal Tap," "Stand by Me," "The Princess Bride," "When Harry Met Sally," and "Misery." He began his career as an actor on the hit TV show "All in the Family" before transitioning to directing.

A Family's Tragedy

The Reiner family has been deeply affected by this tragedy. Jake and Romy, Rob and Michele's children, released a statement expressing their "unimaginable pain" following the loss of their parents.

"The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends," they said. "We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life."

As the entertainment industry mourns the loss of a true icon, Sutherland's recollection serves as a poignant reminder of Reiner's talent and the lasting impact he had on the world of film. The "A Few Good Men" scene, directed by Reiner, continues to be celebrated as one of the most powerful moments in cinema, a testament to the director's ability to capture extraordinary performances from his actors.
