Las Vegas Braces for More Rain After Record-Breaking Weekend
Las Vegas residents are urged to prepare for another round of unsettled weather as the valley continues to experience a rare and persistent rainy pattern. After Saturday's deluge shattered a 61-year rainfall record, meteorologists have issued a flash flood watch and warned of multiple storm systems moving through the region this week.
Record Rainfall and Current Conditions
Harry Reid International Airport recorded 0.65 inches of rain on November 16th, making it the wettest November 16th in recorded history since 1964. This significant rainfall follows a series of storms that have dumped over a half-inch of rain in recent days. While Sunday brought some relief with reduced rain chances, residents experienced windy to gusty conditions as the first system began to move out.
Flash Flood Watch and Mountain Snow
A more serious concern is the flash flood watch issued by the National Weather Service, effective from Sunday night through Wednesday morning. The warning affects Southern Nevada, northwest Arizona, and eastern California, with heavy downpours expected to cause rapid runoff in already saturated areas. Mountain regions face severe weather too, with the Spring Mountains under a winter storm warning projected to receive 5-24 inches of snow above 7,000 feet. The Sheep Range north of Las Vegas will see similar accumulations.
"Combined with the wet soils from the weekend storm system, storm runoff will happen quickly and may lead to rapid flooding of sensitive basins." - National Weather Service
Safety Tips for Residents and Visitors
With saturated ground and additional rainfall forecasted, safety authorities recommend:
Avoid driving through flooded roadways – just 6 inches of moving water can knock a person down
Secure outdoor items that could become wind hazards
Prepare for possible travel delays, especially to mountainous areas
Looking Ahead: Break and Potential F1 Storm
Residents might see a brief respite on Wednesday before another system potentially arrives around the time of the Formula 1 Las Grand Prix. While this next storm may lack sufficient energy to impact southern Nevada, forecasters emphasize that models remain uncertain. "We'll have a better grasp on that system by Tuesday," stated meteorologists.
