Stargate Returns: Amazon Orders New Series
The Gate Opens Again: Stargate Revival Announced for Prime Video
After more than a decade of silence, the iconic Stargate franchise is making a monumental return to television. Amazon MGM Studios has officially greenlit a new Stargate series for Prime Video, marking the first major revival of the beloved sci-fi universe since 2011's Stargate Universe.

A Legacy Reimagined
Stargate first captivated audiences Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin's 1994 film, which spawned an expansive universe spanning multiple TV series including Stargate SG-1 (1997-2007), Stargate Atlantis (2004-2009), and Stargate Universe (2009-2011). The franchise's unique blend of military sci-fi, ancient mythology, and cosmic exploration has earned a dedicated global fanbase that has kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and passionate online communities.
Creative Team Honors Franchise Roots
The new series comes from Stargate veteran Martin Gero, who will serve as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Gero's deep connection to the franchise is undeniable - his television career began as a story editor on Stargate: Atlantis, where he spent five years working across all three series.
"Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series. Stargate taught me everything about making television — it's written into my DNA," Gero stated in a press release.

The production boasts an impressive lineup of executive producers including Emmerich and Devlin (the original film creators), as well as Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters). Franchise stalwarts Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi will serve as consulting producers, ensuring continuity with the established Stargate canon.
Amazon's Sci-Fi Commitment
This revival represents Amazon MGM Studios' continued investment in revitalizing classic properties following its $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM in 2022. The Stargate series joins other upcoming projects including Legally Blonde prequel Elle and Tomb Raider starring Sophie Turner.
"Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity's place in the cosmos," said Nick Pepper, Head of US SVOD TV Development at Amazon MGM Studios. "We're honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience."
"This one's for you [fans]. And for those that are new to our world — I promise you're in for something extraordinary." - Martin Gero
What to Expect
While plot details remain under wraps, Amazon promises a "bold new chapter" that honors the franchise's rich legacy while propelling it into "an ambitious and emotionally resonant future." Given Gero's background in military sci-fi and his work on Quantum Leap, fans can expect a balance of cosmic adventure, human drama, and innovative storytelling.
The new series will be the first live-action Stargate production since 2011's Stargate Universe finale, ending a 14-year hiatus. As the franchise prepares to enter its fourth decade, this revival comes at a time when audiences are increasingly hungry for immersive sci-fi universes with expansive world-building and compelling character narratives.
With production scheduled to begin soon, the countdown has officially started for Stargate fans worldwide. The gate is open, and a new era of cosmic exploration awaits on Prime Video.
